      Hello!

I am the Layout Editor of a small school newspaper that is entirely student-run.

We use InDesign (CS6) to create the paper from week to week. We store our files on our school’s server, and we have 9 different computers, all Macs, that we use to access that server. (Permission to access the server is granted on a user by user basis, and changes from semester to semester).

I recently licensed two fonts from MyFonts.com, and (I thought) I installed them in such a way that they would be available to any user who logged in to one of the 9 computers. I did this by placing the folder containing both the OpenType and TrueType files into the “Fonts” folder in the Library of each computer. (Because we only purchased 10 desktop licenses, I need to make sure that the fonts are on the hard drive of the computer and can be used regardless of who is logged in.)

I created a test file using the new fonts (on the computer where I originally installed them), and I uploaded the file to the server we all use. I then logged into 3 of the other computers, and opened that same test file in InDesign. InDesign tells me that the font files cannot be found.

I think it has something to do with the fact that I have both the OpenType and TrueType files installed on all of the computers, and that I probably specified one or the other (without knowing it) when I was creating the test document.

I have tried going into the Font Book on the Mac and enabling/disabling the extra copies of the fonts to see if one set would work or vice versa.

I have tried creating an alias of the folder containing the font files, and dragging it into the InDesign Fonts folder.

So far, these approaches haven’t worked, and I can’t find any more information to help with troubleshooting this particular problem. Can anyone tell me if there’s something I’ve missed, or another potential solution? I would be so grateful for the help!

I can also give you more information if I’ve left out anything critical to figuring this out. Thank you so much!

Sounds frustrating; I can only offer some suggestions:

      1. Create a new folder on each Mac, at the User level or desktop for these fonts. Mac OS X has separate Libraries for the System and Users, so it could be in the wrong Library. (Delete the alias for the folder you made)

      2. Consider a font management program. There are a lot of them in all price ranges; Extensis Fusion 6 is on the high end, but for 10 licenses, it may be in your budget. I work at a print shop, so I am loading and unloading fonts all day long, and it works.

      3. You’re right, you would have chosen the TTF or OTF and InDesign wants the same version. You can replace with the other one if it’s available.

      4. Clear your font cache:

      Good luck.
