Hi everybody. I’m new in this forum and would like to know how to select all text in all stories in the document, just like ctrl-a selects all text in the current story. Thanks a lot.

What do you want to do to the text?

If you have a text frame on page 1 and a text frame on page 5, and they are not threaded together, then there is no way to select the text on both those pages.

As David said–if they are not threaded then you can’t select all the text. You will have to thread them together, and then you can select all the text.

Could you tell me how to select all threaded text frame? Thank you guys.

Hi guys, thanks a lot for your comments. What about if I have a 50-pages document where there are 10 stories scattered over the pages. Some of them occupy only one frame, some others use several frames in the same page and most others occupy several frames over different pages. Each story may have different style and I need to make some kind of change in the text of all stories. How do I select all the text to apply the changes? This is something that can be done with any word processing program. Think about this. It wouldn’t be practical to thread all these stories just to be able to select all text. And I have a couple of related questions: how do I navigate through the various stories in the document? E.g. how do I navigate from one story to the next or previous or to the last story? How do I select all frames from a particular story (the frames, not the text)? And is there a way to select all frames in a document, or at least all text frames? The only “select all” shortcut I know selects all frames from a page or spread, but not from the whole document. Any help will be highly appreciated. G.

I don’t think you can compare a word processing program to a page layout program.

And so far as I know, in Word, everything is one large file and don’t technically thread.

I always thread all my text in my files from the beginning, and that avoids problems like this.

I think there is a script that helps link unlinked text frames, but I’ve never had to use it. It may be one of the sample ones that came with InDesign.

Do your different stories use paragraph and/or character styles?

If you have to replace a font, you can try the “find font” menu, but only if you have to change the font in all the stories.
In all the other cases maybe “find and change” can help for the text corrections?

Gustavo: We need to know what you want to DO to the text. Maybe you do not have to select it at all to make the change. You can use Edit > Find/Change, or you Type > Find Font, or — the best idea — use Paragraph styles (or character styles).

Well, seems to be that having various stories in a document is not such a great idea after all. Better have all text frames threaded in a single story and break the text where needed with page/frame/section breaks, right? Anyway, anybody knows at least how to select all text frames in a document?

I don’t know of any way you can. I think you are limited to spreads.

      Thank you guys..

Gustavo, you can change the formatting of all the text in all the stories by using Find/Change (in the Edit menu). Be sure to choose “Document” as the scope in that dialog box, instead of “Selection” or “Story”
