I love smart guides — that appearance of a red (magenta?) line when I am dragging an object towards the middle of a page, letting me know I have found it. Yes, smart guides do several other things as well, but you already know that. For some odd reason it has stopped working. I went to Preferences/Guides and Pasteboard and the four little check boxes under “Smart Guide Options” were all checked. What have I missed?
I solved the problem, at least for now, by going into Time Machine (yes, I am on a Mac) and by using a trick I tracked down on the web, was able to get into the usually hidden preferences folder of my User Library folder. I went back about two months (just to make sure) and copied the InDesign Preferences from the En_GB folder. Then I exited from Time Machine, deleted the InDesign Preferences in my current En_GB folder and pasted the earlier one in.
But that seems a clumsy way to solve the problem. Is there a better way? And what caused it to stop working in the first place?
Can no one help me with this?
Thank you, David. That explained it exactly. I must have hit the key combination Command-Shift-Apostrophe by mistake somewhere along the line.
