I think I hamfisted the keyboard when trying to use the Place keyboard shortcut. Now any transparent png that I import is displaying with the transparency grid, instead of actually being transparent.

I’ve looked through the Prefs, but can’t find anything relevant. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

transparency-grid … huh? you talking about viewing your *.indd file or the resultant *.pdf file?

i know of a baseline-grid as well as a document-grid … neither supports transparency behavior. or are you talking about layer rather than grid? or perhaps “object-effects”(transparency filter)? there is also display-preference transparency (prefs/display-perf). maybe you hit the shift-w key instead of shift-d key (view/screen-mode)?

perhaps you could post an image to photobucket and refer appropriate link? take one snapshot of what should look like … and second image of the problematic issue?

fwiw … might also be helpful knowing the version of indesign you are using?

I found your post whist trying to find an answer to the same problem. Both Illustrator and Photoshop have nice easy transparency grids so you can visualise transparent areas. Indesign uses the printed page metaphor so by default the page is paper white.

The solution is quite easy, just go to the colour swatches and edit the ‘Paper’ swatch to a visible colour. It doesn’t matter what it is as when you export to PDF eg. it won’t show (because in feet it’s transparent) this also works for knocking out text etc.
