Can anyone help? I started a 24 page document in Indesign CC 2014 and have been using the file off of a dropbox acct on my two machines (desktop and macbook pro). I need to rearrange some of the pages but when I try to drag and drop the pages in the Pages menu, I get the ominous spinning wheel…for about 20 mins at times. then It will just crash. The document doesn’t have a tone of images. I’ve also tried to collect and package the file but get the same thing.

Other files seem to be fine, I tried to clone the pages over to a new document but I will get the wheel again there as well.

I tried to save the file as an IDML file and then try to open that but still cannot rearrange pages in the Pages panel as needed. Very frustrating.

      What should I do?? Help!

I take it you are dragging and dropping those pages from your drop box directly to your open file?

What about dragging the file to your desktop and then doing your thing?

Another idea might be to turn off the fonts temporarily?

No, sorry about that. I should clarify. My file is saved to my dropbox account and i’m sharing it between two computers of mine. (just thought I’d mention that incase that mattered). When I open the file, either on my laptop or desktop, it works fine while doing edits to text and images, but then I needed to rearrange or reorder pages in the Pages window and that is where it ends and goes into the spinning wheel. (if its important, I have master pages set up, the document is set to facing pages and the page numbering system is set to start numbering pages with page 1 on the 3rd actual page of the layout). The document will crash the program when I try to package/collect it for the print house.

Any suggestions? I need to get it ready in a few days and dread having to redo all 24 page of this piece.

      Thanks in advance.

And IDML doesn’t fix it? Wow.
Have you tried using the Layout > Pages > Move feature instead of dragging them?

Just as a place to look, I have had unpredictable ID crashes when accessing files on a cloud server (granted it was Jungledisk, not Dropbox). The way I fixed it was to use their sync product so that I had a copy physically on my disk that was then synced to the cloud. I know Dropbox works like this out of the box, but there may be something about their syncing engine that is interfering with InDesign (for example, I never had issues with Illustrator or Photoshop with large files in the cloud). It may be their sync engine is too aggressive from a timing standpoint, and the file gets locked at the same time that ID is trying to write to it.

Try making a copy of the file onto your local drive and see if you have the same problem. Then put it in your dropbox folder for syncing. I know this is a pain from a workflow standpoint, but I have seen InDesign choke on cloud files. This cloud technology is great, but it still has some kinks.
