I’m working on a document with over 400 footnotes.
I have a footnote style and have set the rule over the footnotes to a certain weight and offset.
On one page – and this issue only crops up once – the line is thicker and longer. I’ve cleared overrides on the style, checked for rule above, below, underline, strikethrough… I’ve deleted the footnote and reinserted – and it still has that funny thick line.
      Any ideas?
      Thanks so much!

Ran into this a while ago and got the answer in this forum

You are most likely referring to a “footnote continuation separator” which appears whenever the text of a footnote continues to the next page. To change this so the separator has the same weight go to
(Menu) Type > Document Footnote Options > Rule Above (select “continued footnotes” from the dropdown) and enter the same values as your regular rule above

      You are a genius!
I was just going to repost and say that I now see it happened 4 times and all on continued footnotes, but I still wouldn’t not known how to change it.
      Thanks so much!

Perhaps you can answer one more question.
As per request of the editor/publishing house, I’ve reset the footnotes to restart from 1 every section. Randomly, some numbers have not changed (I’ve come across 5 instances right now). Why would that be?

I’ve come across that before, and sometimes situations where my rules above disappear. The only solution I’ve found is to delete the text box on that page and relink it.
