Update for Free Change InDesign User Interface Language Posted

37

Back in 2009, a scripter wrote an app that let you change the user interface (UI) language of InDesign to almost anything… Greek, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, and so on. This turned out to be extremely helpful in a wide variety of situations. For example, some people had an Italian version but preferred to use the English menus. Other people had the English version but really preferred seeing everything in Korean.

I wrote about the app in this article here, and noted that it was Mac-only. Fortunately, some Windows users jumped in and showed how you could do something similar there.

However, when Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” came out, some users started to write to us, saying the app no longer worked. I wouldn’t know because I’m usually among the last to ever upgrade to a new operating system. Anyway, a well-known and accomplished scripter, Ray Robertson of Scripting Events (also known by his earlier company, Scripting Matters), stepped forward to update the script/app.

You can download the new version of this Mac application here. It appears to work in 10.6 and 10.5, too. Yay!

[Note that this script no longer works for CS6 and CC and later. See this post for a new technique.]

Note that after you change your UI and relaunch InDesign, your workspace (panels, shortcuts, etc.) will be messed up! But you can fix that easily. See the section called “Workspaces and Shortcuts” in the original blog post to learn how.

If you find this script useful, please please please click the Donate button on Scripting Events and send him something. Right now, he’s donating all proceeds to a charity, but honestly, he deserves to keep some himself! Or, if you need an applescript built (especially scripts that need to automate two or more applications on the Mac), contact Ray!

  • fedefett says:

    not working in cs6

  • sarah says:

When I try to use it a window pops up saying “The selected application does not contain ‘InDesign’. Please try running the script again.” I have InDesign CS5 on Macbook Pro with OSX and can’t change it from German (legally bought) to English.

  • In Mountain Lion (10.8) you may need to turn off GateKeeper before you run the script, and then turn GateKeeper back on again. https://creativepro.com/change-indesigns-ui-language-with-free-app.php/comment-page-2#comment-506609

We’ve moved to a new server, and some files didn’t make it. I think it’s working now. Try again!

    What should I do?

  • Pamela Cabello says:

    Hello!

I’m finding the same problem, I have OS 10.9
    I get the following message:
    {“ChangeIDmenuLanguage2.app” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash}

    • Michelle says:

How did you get it to do that??? I’m on Maverick too, looking at CS5 and I’m getting the same message as a bunch of other users (that the file is damaged and I should trash it). What’s going on!

  • Helene says:

it don’t work any more :ccc

  • Helene says:

so no more for cs5? :/

  • Liz says:

If the file comes up damaged in OSX 9.5 (Mavericks) you can solve it by going to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Click little padlock to make changes -> Type your password -> Choose “Everywhere” in the previously greyed out, now clickable area.

Then try to open the downloaded script file again. It worked for me. No longer damaged.

  • Adam says:

Works perfectly for cs5 on mavericks – just had to change the settings in privacy ‘allow apps downloaded from’ to ‘anywhere’

    thanks a million
