This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 114
It’s always more quiet during the holidays, but there are still some excellent videos and articles you should know about. Here’s some just in time before the new year!
- Never enough Tetris? Not content to allow DTP Tools to have all the fun, now Marc at Indiscripts lets you run Tetris inside InDesign with a script!
- Terry White has recorded a fun short video on how to get started with Adobe InDesign CC and the 10 things beginners want to know how to do.
- Here are a bunch of scripts that Silicon Publishing has released on github. Some great stuff in here, largely (entirely?) written by Ole Kvern.
- Ooh, more scripts… here’s how you can sort your color swatches with an easy script!
- This is wild: a 28-minute video (google hangout recording) on the topic of using data merge to design game cards. Reminds me of some of the work Adam Jury does!
- I can’t recall if I linked to this amazing and crazy script that lets you make “pie charts” of almost anything, including text frames.
- How’s Adobe doing? Well, see for yourself in this info graphic from Adobe!
Digital Publishing
- Want to make tablet apps pretty inexpensively? Check out this array of 5 options, including Baker Framework, Web App via Amazon, and PhoneGap.
- You have a bunch of PDF files, and now you want to make a DPS app from them? Here’s a script for rapidly creating folios using a PDF-to-InDesign script
- Here’s a video tutorial on how you can set up your files and folders for DPS apps
Enjoy!
Thanks for linking to my tutorial on designing game cards with DataMerge! I have a whole class on this subject available on SkillShare here:

Hope you dig it!
Has anyone had success using the SortSwatches script mentioned in bullet point 4 above? I ask because I downloaded it, and it’s not a script. It’s an extension, and the description says “Combines multiple textframes while retaining formatting.” Perhaps there’s another link to a script that does really sort swatches? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
@shanwgirsberger: That link goes to ajarproductions; from there it sounds like you downloaded the wrong script. Go back to that page and search for the text that says “Download SortSwatches_ID.zip (CS4 and up, includes CC installer)”
Sorry, David, but that’s what I did, and the two files within the folder were SortSwatches_ID.mxp and SortSwatches_ID_cc.zxp. No scripts?
Ah, the mxp uses Extension Manager to install the scripts. That is different than most scripts.
If you would rather get to the scripts themselves, you can find the scripts inside the mxp by opening the file with a zip archive program like BetterZip or Springy on the Mac. Or, on Windows, I think you might be able to change the file name extension to .zip and open it that way.
I tried installing it through EM again and it worked fine this time. Not sure what the problem was the first time, or why the description is that combines multiple text frames while retaining formatting, but it is one way to organize swatches. If only we could have color groups. I usually don’t organize swatches numerically. : )
Thanks for your patience, David!
Has anyone tried using the script with gradient swatches? It converted all of my color gradients to grayscale gradients. Tested it with ID CC on a PC but will try it on my Mac as well.
