What’s That Page Number in the Lower-Left Corner?

Michael asked: What’s that page number in the lower-left corner of the document window? In QuarkXPress it displays whatever page is touching the upper-left corner of the window, but I can’t figure it out in InDesign.

To be honest, Michael, this question has stumped me for 5 years, and I more or less gave up trying to figure it out. However, a kind Adobe engineer recently provided the answer: It’s the page number whose center point lies closest to the center point of the window. Ah-ha! Like so many behaviors, it’s only obvious after you’re told where to look.

Don’t forget that the page number in the lower-left corner is editable. You can click in there to select the page number, or press Command/Ctrl-J to jump there quickly. Then type 3 to go to page 3, +3 to jump to the “third page” of the document, or A to jump to “master page A.”

If you’re using custom page numbering, for example in a magazine or book where you start with page 3 — assuming you make the cover in a separate document — you won’t be able to visit page 1 as there isn’t one.
Slightly annoying at times, but that’s what the Home key is for on the keyboard.

Good point, Roland. But if you type a plus sign before the 1, you go to the “first” page, no matter what it’s called. +1 goes to the first page, +2 the second page, and so on.
