Acrobat Update Causing Problems for Mac InDesign and Illustrator Users
Over the last couple of weeks there was a sudden rash of complaints in the Adobe User to User forums (here’s one such thread) about InDesign and Illustrator prompting the user to reenter their serial number.
Even doing so, resulted in the application hanging. Adobe is now aware of the issue and has found the problem to be with the Acrobat 8.2 update. A TechNote with a fix, has been issued but it may only be temporary and the problem could rear its ugly head again at any time.
According to the TechNote, this only affects CS and CS2 users on OSX but a report of a similar problem was posted from an InDesign 2.0.2 user yesterday.
I’ll be keeping an eye on this will update the post if something permanent is found.
Feb 2 Update: A few users have reported that this problem also applies to InDesign 2.0 and that the fix mentioned in the TechNote fixes it.

I read this with a sense of great relief. So THAT?s what?s causing the problem!
I am using CS4 for almost everything but I keep CS2 (and CS3) on my machine because I have a couple of clients who, for their own solid financial reasons, have decided not to update. When they send me a CS2 (or CS3) file, it is no good my editing it with CS4.
Yes, I know I could export as IMX or XML, but that is daunting to my clients who are not tech savvy. So much easier just to open the file in the appropriate version of InDesign (largely thanks to Soxy, which makes it automatic), carry out my edit, save and return the file to the client.
Now it keeps asking for my serial number! But I can?t even find the original installation disk for CS2 — heaven knows where I stored it for safe keeping! So how do I recover my serial number? Grrrr! [Utters naughty words about Adobe?s obsession with security.]
I shall certainly be watching and waiting for that update post, Bob!
I run OS X 10.5.8 on an iMac and have Acrobat 7.0 Professional, and have been hit with this same problem. For what it’s worth, here is the error message report issue…

Easy to follow and worked, what more can you ask except maybe for Adobe to test it’s upgrades a bit harder
Updated software on 2-5 or 2-6 and now my CS indesign, photoshop and illustrator won’t open. I have the version bought in 2003 or 2004. I get a window that says “The application Adobe InDesign quit unexpectedly.” Some of my fonts and/or other items now display as gray folders that have “uxec”, so when you click on the folder it wants to know what you want to use to open it.
The problem folder mentions the following:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000080000004
Oh, after the software updates and been installed – it asked for a restart. So … after agreeing to a restart, I notice a window that said something about “saving items for startup in boot cache” or words to that effect.
Thank you so much for posting this info. I only use my boss’ office periodically and was faced with this problem today. I’m running OSX (forget which one, maybe panther?) and have CS2 AND my boss clicked an update for Acrobat 8.5 without my knowledge last week. I walked in to update a publication but InDesign wouldn’t start until I entered a serial number. I found the original box and none of the serial numbers there worked. My first go-to source is InDesignSecrets, and you saved me hours of headache. The patch worked but I want to warn anybody of one glitch I found:
It says to copy a file to a location in Library/applicationsupport/… and my computer actually has two of these. The first one I found didn’t have a folder in it named “/Unicode/Mappings” so I created these folders. Of course the patch didn’t work this way. Then I went looking for another library folder and found it. I successfully pasted the “Mac” folder in the already existing “Mappings” folder and now have control over InDesign. Deep sigh, now back to work.
where did you find the ‘other library folder’ as I can’t find one, I am having the same problem of the mappings folder not existing. creating a new one does not work.

Donna, there should be a Library in your home directory (which is the one with your login name on it), and another on the root of the hard disk. Try each of those.
