Align to baseline grid doesn’t work on the pasteboard?

2

This just came from a post on the user to user forum where someone wrote she was having problems with text that jumped its leading increments.

It was an obvious problem with text aligned to the baseline grid.

But a comment the user made that the text behaved fine when it was on the pasteboard startled me.

She wrote:

“when I pull the text box off the page onto the pasteboard, I can adjust the leading just fine”

Whoa! If a text frame is not on the page, align to baseline grid no longer applies.

Well it makes some sense as the baseline grid is applied to a page. And the document baseline grid only appears over each page.

But seems to me that this could cause great confusions as the user found. Draw a frame in the artboard and it behaves one way. Place it on the page and kaboom, it behaves another.

I don’t believe early versions of ID behaved this way and would love to know when it changed. (When the custom baseline grid was added to individual frames?)

But this is definitely a “gotcha” for most people, especially those coming from Quark which does not discriminate between the artboard and the pasteboard.

As far as I know it works like that in CS2, it stumped me when we took a magazine back inhouse as to what was happening. I hadn’t seen it before and I thought it was just me. Phew.

I just tested it ans it works the same way in CS. But there is a workaround: apply a custom baselinegrid to the frame with the same increment as it is set up in your preferences. If you take care to move the frame from the page to the pasteboard while pressing the shift key to constrain it horizontally, the leading won’t be modified.
