Free Lynda.com Video: 10 Tips for Troubleshooting InDesign Files

Sometimes I think that life is just a dance with entropy, and you never can tell who’s leading. We spend most of our time building, fixing, cleaning, and finding things. But everything wants to be dirty, broken, and lost. Still, we fight the good fight and use our tools and brains to make it all work. This extends to our InDesign files too, and when things go wrong in those, you need an ally like Anne-Marie Concepcion to help you get things working again. In her Lynda.com course, 10 Tips for Troubleshooting InDesign Files, Anne-Marie gives you all the strategies you need to diagnose why a file isn’t working, and get it fixed pronto. And don’t mind that the course is a few years old. Nearly everything in it still applies, and probably always will for as long as InDesign is a thing.

Here’s the course description:

InDesign users might at some point encounter misbehaving files that stop production dead in its tracks. In InDesign CS4: 10 Tips for Troubleshooting Files, Adobe Certified Instructor Anne-Marie Concepción passes on her knowledge of diagnosing and repairing these problems, drawing on her experience from helping hundreds of users. Anne-Marie shows how to rebuild preferences quickly and safely, systematically test for corrupt images and fonts, and even clean out corruption errors by hand-editing INX files. Exercise files accompany the course.

Topics include:

  • Using a document’s history to work through problems
  • Creating a test user account to check for conflicts with other user settings
  • Round-tripping a file to work out specific issues
  • Locating and disabling third-party plug-ins to reset InDesign

In the free video below, Anne-Marie shows how to remedy problems by moving pages to a fresh file. Check it out!
