This Month in InDesign Articles, Number 139
I had an amazing time at The InDesign Conference last week… the attendees I met were great, the speakers were awesome, even the food was great! But the conference isn’t the only place to find great InDesign information… here are a whole bunch of tips, tricks, videos, and articles you should know about:
- Have you ever wanted to print the hidden glyphs (Type > Show Invisibles) as real characters? Check out this new free font from Indiscripts!
- And, speaking of Indiscripts, they have an amazing new script called RichPaste which lets you paste formatted text, stripping out most of the stuff you don’t want and keeping just the parts you do (e.g. italic or bold styling).
- Lesa Snider has a lovely 75-page ebook about how to make photo gifts. While she focuses on Photoshop and Elements and iPhoto, some of these tips could also be laid out in InDesign!
- Have you designed a beautiful typeface or an incredible design piece recently? Whether it’s pro or student work, consider submitting it to the Typography XXXVII contest for the Type Directors Club.
- Want some amazing GREP expressions helpful for EPUB production? Check out this amazing #eprdctn hour filled with cool examples!
- Yes, it’s true that Bridge CC is 100% free for you to download and use forever!
- You’re not still using Acrobat X, are you? If so, time to upgrade to XI or DC, because Adobe is ending support for X. (Personally, I still use XI.)
- Do you use Slack? Here at InDesignSecrets, we use it daily, which is why it’s kind of cool that Adobe CC now lets you share your CC Libraries assets with a Slack channel. (But be careful, as authorizing Slack may lead to more access to your channels than you’d expect.)
- Interested in using InDesign for UX/UI? Check out this great list of resources!
- Here’s one of the most fun uses of Publish Online I’ve seen… Keith Snyder is one funny man. (And here’s a Publish Online piece about Morisawa Japanese fonts which is beautiful!)
- I want to go to the American Bookbinders Museum in San Francisco!
- Did you know you can watch Lynda.com titles offline on Mac and Windows now? (And did you notice that the company now capitalizes the “L” in their name?)
- Erica Gamet has written up a terrific step-by-step about how to make numbered figure captions in InDesign.
- National Geographic has a useful article for anyone interested in data visualization
- Blurb makes really great custom books… here’s a nice article about how Robert Generette created his in InDesign.
- Want to make an awesome effect that looks like an LCD calculator? Mike Rankin shows how!
- Adobe Comp is a cool tool for laying out pages on your iPad. Check out how! Oh, and here’s another great how-to article about it!
- I’m surprised how many InDesign users don’t know about (or use) the Preflight panel.
- This is one of my favorite T-shirts (below). I don’t think they’re making it at the moment, but if enough people sign up then perhaps they’ll bring it back!
Enjoy!
…speaking of Acrobat DC, wow, I really do not like it at all. I just want to be able to view my pdfs “bare”, and not have to deal with the obligatory application frame that I have been unable as yet to turn completely off (and seems, alas, to be the Adobe trend, which I would really love to see go away). I’m sure it’s great for a number of reasons and workflows, but working on a laptop, I have very limited real estate. Ideas? (I don’t want to use Preview; need to be able to view interactive elements).
