New Interactive Documents with InDesign Title Now Available at lynda.com

9

Recently most of my posts on InDesign Secrets have about creating and working with interactive documents and presentations. It might not seem surprising that I my first lynda.com series is on that very topic. Recording my first video series was really challenging and I can’t stand to hear my own voice, but if you are interested in learning more information about creating interactive documents with InDesign CS5, here is the description of the series (and there’s a sample movie below):

In InDesign CS5: Interactive Documents and Presentations, Adobe Certified Instructor and designer James Fritz shows print designers how to use InDesign by itself and in conjunction Flash Professional to layout and design a wide range of digital documents. The course provides a tour of digital publishing trends, showing real-world examples of what can be achieved through InDesign. Several start-to-finish projects are also included, such as creating a presentation with transitions and animations, and building an interactive microsite. Exercise files accompany the course.

Topics include:

  • Studying new trends in digital design
  • Creating a PDF and SWF presentation
  • Building different navigation systems
  • Creating interactive slideshows
  • Animating a presentation as a SWF in InDesign
  • Designing an interactive microsite
  • Adding video and audio to a document
  • Building an interactive TOC with buttons
  • Using InDesign and Flash to build an interactive catalog
  • InDesign to Flash production tips

If you want to see the videos, but you’re not currently a lynda.com subscriber, you have two options:

  • You can watch a couple of the movies for free by going to this link.
  • If you want to watch them for free, you can sign up here for a 1-day pass. Then, if you love it, you’ll find it surprisingly inexpensive to subscribe!

Here is a sample of one movie from the title:

James Fritz is a Principal Program Manager: Content Tools and Workflows at LinkedIn.
  • Harbs says:

    Congrats!
    Very nicely done!

I know exactly what you mean about listening to your own voice. I cannot stand listening to videos that I create… Your voice sounds just fine! :-)

  • DrHo.ro says:

Very helpful series. Will use your tips to rewrite my ebooks and recommend your video to my students.

  • James Fritz says:

@Harbs – Thanks for the kind words. While recording, I thought of a million dollar idea. I would like to create an audio filter than distorts my voice so it sounds like I hear it in my head.

@DrHo.ro – I hope my series is very helpful to you and your students.

  • A great title, Fritz. I like that lots of the chapters are project-based, too! Makes it more fun.

For the video above, I was wondering why you didn’t preview the transitions in the Preview panel? (Haven’t gotten to that lesson yet in the title?)

  • James Fritz says:

The reason I didn’t cover the preview panel in this video was because I think this was in the chapter about interactive PDF’s. While it is true that it works on PDF’s, I focus on the preview much more in the SWF chapter.

  • Andreas Galster says:

Just saw your title today and started immediately to watch this. I was waiting for so long for this! Looking good so far. The Born magazine is a huge inspiration I always was wondeirng how they did it.

    Thanks.

  • Luis says:

Great! I look forward to watching this. I recently watched the CS4 interactive pdf lesson and found it to be quite helpful. It will be interesting to see what else I can learn.

  • Travis says:

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of this title. I can’t wait to dive in!

  • Christina says:

I really loved the series and have put it to good use! I have created a “booklet” that I exported to swf and then placed the swf on a html page using DreamWeaver so I can send a link not a file and be able to edit/remove anytime – Except one page I placed a f4v video and it plays in the preview in ID but not on the final web page. I am searching all over to find out how to get around but no luck – any tips you could offer would be appreciated!
