Patch Day for InDesign and Snow Leopard
Microsoft has established Patch Tuesday for its security patches for Windows. Patches for InDesign and for Mac OS X don’t come on such a regular schedule, but arrived on Tuesday, April 26. It’s a best practice to keep your computers updated with software patches as they come out to prevent unexpected problems.
InDesign CS5 7.0.4
Adobe released a patch to InDesign CS5 7.0.4 to fix a number of problems including those related to the exporting of PDF files and IDML. Check out the CS5 7.0.4 Release Notes for all the details. Here are some highlights:
InDesign unexpectedly quits when a master page has 3 or more columns and new pages are inserted. [2688552]
InDesign shuts down on export of converted document to IDML if it contains invalid frame data [2748140]*
InDesign CS5 unexpectedly quits opening documents from previous versions with invalid frame data [2729972]*
InDesign becomes unresponsive when exporting to PDF [2670994]
InDesign CS5 unexpectedly quits when allocating large memory. [2776161]*
John Hawkinson reports on the Adobe InDesign Forum:
We had a number of really serious problems with IDML exports and opening CS3 files in CS5, all of which seem to be fixed in 7.0.4.
Snow Leopard Font Update
We wrote about a month ago about a bug in Mac OS X 10.6.7 which affected the use of PostScript OpenType fonts. It doesn’t affect InDesign so much, but affects other applications which use the Mac OS X font mechanism. Today, Apple released the Snow Leopard Font Update which apparently fixes this problem. The patch is available in Snow Leopard from Software Update.
Apple lists four specific problems fixed by the update, including:
- An issue in which some OpenType fonts don’t display correctly in certain applications
- Printing problems in Preview
- PDF files not opening in third-party PDF viewing applications
- Invalid font errors when printing to PostScript printers
Crashing bug I first discovered and reported in 7.0.2 has still not been fixed. I have reported it again.
Open up a document, set the measurements to inches. Now go into document setup and in one of the page size boxes, try to subtract a unit in a different measurement… such as 11in -9mm
As soon as you tab out of the box or click OK, ID will freeze then crash. It crashes with any measurement unit as long as the 2 are different. Also crashes in the New Document window.
File>New Document>297 x 210mm
File>Document setup
Subtract -2inches (or any different unit of measurement) from width or height.
This has been a bug for a while. Still not fixed in latest patch.
The bug that causes text flows with footnotes to skip frames and ID eventually to crash is still alive and thriving.
OK, both of these bugs that still aren’t fixed are a huge concern to me. (really, one more than the other, but still)
our office is imminently going to upgrade?what other surprises await us?
Undate: bug that causes text flows with footnotes to skip frames was not fixed in ID CS 5.5.
