Has anyone used this? We’ve always used an ancient PDF to Word converter when all we’ve got to work on is PDFs. It would be great if we could cut this stage out and go straight from PDF to InDesign.
Slightly off-topic; I don’t think much of their 90s-style website…
@Skilldrick: True, their web site is old school, but their software is top-notch. See the comments on the old posts about their plug-in. (Some of the notes are outdated, of course. For example, the new versions handle fonts far better.)

With the ability to open pdf’s using illustrator do you really need this? Though of course unless you do not own illustrator.
Granted using this to open some of my colleges old quark (converted to pdf) files might be a bit better opened in indesign, but I hardly think that convenience is worth $300.
Also, just my opinion, but if you’re willing to invest $300 for this program, just save up a bit more and get an older version of illustrator on ebay.
Melissa – although Illustrator can open PDFs, it’s best not to open PDFs in Illustrator less that PDF was made in Illustrator with compatibility for editing preserved.
Illustrator is NOT a PDF editing tool.
The plugin really is handy for files that have become corrupted, lost, or no longer in existence and all you have is the PDF. It’s a great plugin for getting that PDF into an editable InDesign file so that changes can be made in the RIGHT program.
I can’t imagine the heartache of editing a book (our largest is 3,200 pages) in Illustrator, page by page, and making sure all the page start and page endings match up.
Editing a PDF in Illustrator is a bit of a wonky workflow. It may be ok for something like a 1 or 2 page flyer – you may get away with some edits.
If you need to make minor tweaks to a PDF or even major tweaks then there are Plugins for Acrobat, like Quite a Box of Tricks and Pitstop, for example.
But if you’re looking to recreate a layout from a PDF in InDesign and all you have is a PDF, then the Plugin for PDF2ID is well worth every penny, especially if it’s a task you find yourself having to repeatedly do.
Thanks David.
Eugene: I completely agree, Illustrator’s fine if all you want to do is edit a one-page PDF, but beyond that I wouldn’t want to. All those clipping masks!
