Still using CS1? Consider an Upgrade Before It’s Too Late.

12

Once upon a time, Adobe had what could only be considered the most generous upgrade policy in the software industry. That is, any earlier version of a program was eligible for a new version at upgrade pricing.

That policy went out the window with the introduction of Create Suite 3 which restricted upgrades to three versions back and for suite purchases introduced tiered pricing where the most recent version was priced lower than the two older, but still eligible products.

While no official Adobe CS5 announcements have been made, Adobe’s John Nack blogged a reminder to users about the current policy noting that when CS5 does ship, owners of original CS licenses will be out of the upgrade loop and will have to pay full price if they wish to upgrade.

So, if you’re still using CS, upgrading to CS4 before CS5 ships will not only get you a slew of great new features and enhancements, but it will save you a considerable amount of money down the road.

One final note. If you have a suite product you cannot upgrade individual components. A suite license is considered one product with one serial number. An individual application upgrade will not recognize the suite or its serial number for upgrading.

I would hope that no one who considers him/herself a professional is still using CS1. But then again, a few years ago I had to deal with some know-it-all-my-sh@t-don’t-stink designer who was using Quark 3…

    But thanks for the heads-up.

  • I always jump to the newest version … because I work as trainer here in Austria. But even if I don’t, I would try to buy the newest version of this apps. They are just worth it in my daily workflow.

When do you think will CS5 be launched?

  • Official launch date is 12th of April.

  • Michael Gray says:

Oh no, dilemma! I have CS 1, and a view to upgrading to a more recent version at some point. But I don’t really want to spend lots of money right now. If there is a grace period, is that likely to be announced on April 12, with a gap between that announcement and the shipping date? If so, I could (slightly reluctantly) perhaps buy the CS4 in that window, rather than have to pay lots lots more for a full CS5 later. Or is it likely to be the case that CS 1 owners would need to upgrade before April 12 to qualify for a free upgrade to CS5 (if there is one)? How did this work for CS3 to CS4? Any guidance much appreciated…

  • Bob Levine says:

If the past is any indication, on April 12 Adobe will introduce CS5 with some fanfare and glitz and will ship the software about three weeks later.

During that time you’ll be able to buy CS4 and get a free upgrade to CS5.

Again…that’s based on past policy and I have no knowledge of what the CS5 policy will be.

  • Michael Gray says:

Thanks Bob. Will have a think and get my calculator out…

  • Carlo says:

    Hi Bob,
I’m in the same situation of Michael Gray, but my question is: I need to buy upgrade to CS4 before 12th april for apply free upgrade CS5 (grace period, if there’s one) or buy after 12th april? I don’t understand

And again: after 12th april will be yet possible to buy an upgrade to CS4 from a CS?

Thank you so much, for your reply.
    Regards.

    Hi Bob,
I have just purchased a new iMac with the Adobe Creative Suite 4 (Standard Design). Will I have to buy the upgrade for CS5? Have just changed from Quark to CS4.

  • Bob Levine says:

    Sandra and Carlo,

We’ll all have to wait until the 12th to get the official details. Generally speaking, in the past, anyone buying the expiring version within about 30 days of the announcement of the new version has gotten a free upgrade to the new one.

But the past is the past and to repeat, you’ll need to wait til next week for any official word from Adobe. In any case, you’ll need to call them directly.

I clicked to subscribe via RSS but all I got was a page of HTML. I’m using Chrome on 64-bit Windows 7. I wish I could use one of the more popular browsers, but neither are compatible with my set-up, for some reason. Do you have a work-around?
