This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 58

6

I know it’s been a bit quiet around here this month, as we’ve been heads down trying to pull together everything required for the Print and ePublishing Conference next week. It’s been crazy (in a good way), and we have about twice the turnout that we expected originally. Wow. So, I’m sorry we haven’t blogged more. But in the meantime, check out these wonderful articles, videos, and links:

Interactive

  • The Adobe DPS solution has changed a bit recently, especially in how folios are made via acrobat.com services instead of on your desktop. Adobe’s Colin Fleming clears things up in these three videos: Building Folios, Previewing Folios, and Folio Producer.
  • If you’re using DPS, you must get this great tips book/app by Bob Bringhurst.
  • Speaking of DPS, a number of magazine publishers are starting to answer the call from subscribers to provide ipad subscriptions with their print subscriptions. The New Yorker, for example. I have mixed feelings about this, as it takes a lot of extra work to create a DPS edition. But one must do what the subscribers want, I suppose.
  • This was a fascinating article about how Adobe is driving people to infringe (pirate) their software because of pricing and lack of backward compatibility. Hm.
  • On the other hand, it appears that Adobe has changed its pricing for DPS this past week. Here’s an article discussing the changes.
  • Cari Jansen continues on her exploration of EPUB with this piece about bulleted and numbered lists, in which she found a really great workaround for a weird problem.
  • If you are into EPUB, you have to watch Gabriel Powell explore “what’s inside an epub file?” in this 11 minute video from video2brain.
  • One of the best ways to tweak EPUB files is with the Oxygen XML reader (which can edit them without even unpacking the epub archive!). The newest version contains even more EPUB features, as shown in this video.
  • And on the helpful video front, check out the great free videos Adobe’s Colin Fleming has to offer!

    And David, thanks!

*cries a little* seems that everyone is focusing on ePubs at the moment, and I’m concentrating on just pubs, like bars ha ha! Oh man.

Have a great weekend, and everyone at IDS have a great week at Pepcon!

  • Yes, with jokes like that, it certainly sounds as though it’s time for you to hit the pub! :) We’ll miss you at pepcon this year, Eugene, but hope for 2012. That said, not everyone is focusing on interactive stuff; I know it seems like it sometimes, but we must remember that it’s an “and” world, not an “or” world. Print is still very relevant.

  • Eugene Tyson says:

Yeh print is very relevant, as Michael Scott says “Business is done on paper and paper will never go out of business!”

Pepcon is on the cards for next year! I’ve already marked out April – June on the calendar in preparation for travel dates!

Raging slightly I couldn’t go this year but c’est la vie!

  • Phil Frank says:

Thanks for the video on ePub and Oxygen XML. Yesterday I downloaded the update and was ecstatic to see that now Oxygen enables search and replace in all the html files in an ePub archive without unzipping. But just now watching the video I learned about how it now validates ePubs and in doing so it shows where the problems are and allows the user to go right to it and correct it. An awesome upgrade for ePub builders.

  • Lindsey Thomas Martin says:

Surprised that Mr Toma didn’t mention Michael Murphy’s book, Adobe Indesign Styles: How to Create Better, Faster Text & Layouts. Written for CS4 but still very useful.
