This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 62
From EPUB to Lion, from DPS to CS5, we have it all! Well, okay, we don’t have it all, but at least we have links to it all. Have fun perusing these wonderful articles and videos:
- Curious about Adobe’s new option to subscribe to Creative Suite software? Macworld asked Pam Pfiffner and I to argue over whether it’s a good idea or a bad idea.
- If you’re into EPUB (or you want to be), you gotta’ go watch Colin Fleming’s free one-hour webinar recording over at askcspro.
- Keith Gilbert wrote up a good pieces on Locking objects in CS5+.
- Metallic inks have come a long way in recent years! (Setting up metallics in InDesign starts at about 5:00.)
- Fascinating survey of how designers are using print these days.
- Nothing to do with InDesign: This amazing book, um, movie, um, ipad app, is well worth exploring.
- Answering the most obscure InDesign question yet: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
- The folks at Technology for Publishing (I’ve known Margot since the old QX days!) have a new blog in which they’re discussing things like 7 Things To Do Before Publishing A Digital Magazine.
- If you’re in education (or know anyone who is), you have to check out these two tracks of Adobe Education Exchange Live: one for K-12, and one for higher education.
- Into type? You must check out this wonderful site about “thinking with type.”
- Here’s an interesting idea: What if you could view your InDesign document on your Blackberry device? I assume it’s just reading the metadata and previews, but perhaps that would be helpful for some folks.
- I just saw a notice that BBEdit (the venerable Mac text editor, and big brother to the free TextWrangler) can now open and edit EPUB files natively! Plus, they’ve dropped their price dramatically!
- Very interesting to see that Time Magazine has now created an “All Access” subscription service, so that subscribers can get all the content digitally and in print. Crazy, of course, because creating the digital version takes a lot of additional work!
- Upgrading to Mac OS X Lion (10.7)? According to reports, InDesign seems to function just fine. But you’d better read this article about how to deal with the new hidden library feature!
Enjoy!
The BBEdit news is terrific. Being able to open ePub files and work with them directly should be helpful.

On that Blueberry “viewer”, their site says:
“Please Note as the quality of Images and ability to see Multi Page Preview depends on the settings you have setup in your InDesign File Handling Preferences.”
Ah … viewing the native document *is* quite complicated, you can’t blame them.
“Quite complicated”? A masterful understatement, sir. :-)
“The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore” is so brilliantly done, it would tempt me to buy an iPad if I had young kids. The short film is stunning.
In the Moonbot Studios Vimeo collection there are “Making Of'” clips that give fascinating insight into the background and quite startling amount of work (real sets, built to scale, hundreds of model books) in addition to the actual 2D and 3D animations.
