I have 5 books with footnotes. In all 5 books footnotes are linked correctly when exported to epub2 reflowable.

But when I export to Epub3 the popups work in 3 of the books but not the other two. In those two, when I tap on a footnote reference number nothing happens.

I checked the html code to see if there were any differences, but could not find any.

I must be missing something rather obvious, but I’ve wrestled with this now for a few hours with not luck.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? An suggestions where I might look for the casue of the problem?.

Further to the earlier request, I’m still struggling with the popup footnotes for these two documents.
One of them is a long book so I deleted all but one of the chapters all in one layer. I even deleted and recreated some of the notes.
But no luck at all getting the popup footnote to work even with the single chapter….

I checked the html in Sigil against a book where the popup footnotes are working, but could not see any differences in syntax.

I have looked for reports of problems with popup footnotes – they’ve been around for a couple of years now – but have not come across any reports of anything like this.

I’m stumped and I do need to get this working .

More information after a much testing
I worked with the book with the smallest number of footnotes (13). Put all footnotes into a plain text editor and entered them one by one, testing the epub popup notes after each footnote was added.

After three first three footnotes were added the popup footnotes are working on the Ipad. After I add the 4th NONE of the popup foonotes work. It was nothing related to the content of the 4th footnote, becasue the populs do not work when I repeat the first footnote in place of the 4th footnote.

But for a different epub3 book all 64 popup footnotes work with no problem and some of those 64 footnotes are long. The two books use identical footnote styles and settings.

I guess that hardly anyone is using popup footnotes on a regular basis because I not seen any report of problems and there have been no replies here.

I think it’s time to give up on Epub3 for a while? I’ve spent too many hours trying to debug this one.

      Hey Jim,

If you want help with this sort of thing, you’re going to need to show us your code. I have successfully used ePub3 popup footnotes in iBooks, but there isn’t enough data here for me to tell you what’s wrong in your books.

My only clue is that you say “After I add the 4th NONE of the popup footnotes work” and that tells me that there was something malformed about the 4th footnote. Maybe an illegal character or something?

Many thanks for the reply, Matthew. We gave up on the idea of popup footnotes and moved on since then. I do know if was not a malformed footnote because when I replaced the 4th footnote with the first footnote. I got the same error, even though the first footnote worked when it was in it’s correct place.

When I have another book with footnotes to work on I’ll revisit this issue then.

      Many thanks for the reply.

      Jim,

I hope you kept a copy of the files that werent working, I tend to do so, and later try and go back and revisit them when I have time to see if I can’t get the issue resolved. Anyway, hopefully next time you dont have any issues.

Ah, yes. I never work on original files. :-)
      Thanks
