      InDesign CC 2015.4 (fixed-layout ePUB)
      Audition CC 2015.2
      Windows 10

I’m working on an audio book in which the client wants each word on the page to highlight, in synch with the spoken word on the audio file.

I know that Audition supports adding markers to a sound clip at various positions along the timeline. I thought of putting a marker before each word, or every few words on the audio file. Then I wondered if I could get InDesign to animate a semi-transparent rectangle shape to reposition the shape over the (text) word and stay in synch with the corresponding spoken word, by reading the marker’s position.

Can this be done OR is there a better way to do this?

      Hi Christopher

The Fixed Layout EPUB3 standard already has in built support for this feature but InDesign alone does not provide a way to produce. My company has the answer in our software CircularFLO and time stamping is totally free for everyone until the end of August. See here https://www.circularflo.com/2016/05/27/circular-software-summer-sale/

You might also like to read this article https://www.whatsnewinpublishing.co.uk/content/reading-aloud-merging-audio-and-text-just-got-lot-easier on the subject. It’s really good, and I should know I wrote it ;)

I notice you are on Windows and our software CircularFLO is Mac only but we do offer read aloud fixed layout EPUB3 conversions as a service so if you are interested in that please drop us a line at https://www.circularsoftware.com/contact/

      Thanks
