I don’t even know if this is possible, but it seems like it might be. I am looking to rename an indesign file based on the text found in a certain Character style…Like setting up a character style called “File Name”, and some script that looks for the text found in that style, and renames the file accordingly? Or anything similar that could help in a mass amount of unique file renaming.

Looking at it back to front, do all these different files (but with the same name) originate from different people? If so, is it possible to ask each person to rename their own file according to your criteria? Or is it too late for that!

They are all the same exact of file with one difference, a unique company name. It’s a personalized copyright…. “This file is for <<Company Nam>> Use Only.” To make it an easier process on me, I just made a .csv sheet with all the names, used data merge to create all the individual copyrights, and am place & linking them to individualize a manual going out to all of them. I have done the best I can with automating the process. File naming individual files to place is a pain….when there’s 60 plus individual companies.

I`ve no idea, if a script started in InDesign could rename a file on a HD while the file is open, even this is possible on a Mac in the UI? But a script could surely open a file, read the contents of a specific character style and save a copy of that file in a specific location.
