Hi,
I think this thread is suited best here in the Pub, rather than the Id general forum, because it has more to do with subjectivity, rather than actual Id technique.
I’m working on a 60 page document, a sort of manual. It includes a considerable number of lists, bulleted and numbered. The source document had no consistent styling for either type, meaning one came with space after the para break and the other did not. I really like consistency in my document, but it simply didn’t work to put either space or no space in each list. The longer list points needed the space after, while the points that fit on a single line shouldn’t have space after. So now I ended up with a doc with different types of list formatting. I feel it looks at its best now, but the OCD for consistency in me is killing me about it.
Now, what should I do? What would you do? Is there even a preferred standard formatting for lists in English?
Sorry I’m replying after two weeks.
I’m in book publishing and I’d say that 99 percent of the time we always have space before and after a bulleted list (not between, though). Exceptions may be sub-bulleted lists within bulleted lists. Then those are usually closed up. A numbered list within a bulleted list or a bulleted list within a numbered list is a toss-up. Sometimes they want space before and after, but if the lists are short, they are closed up.
I don’t know if there is really a definitive answer.
