      Hi all,
I’m working on a catalogue divided mainly in 2 parts:
the first part has a really long table with thousand of lines with “item description” – [item code] etc…
the second part is a gallery of technical drawings like this: [drawing item code] and below the image

I’ll need to insert a cross reference from every instance of every [item code] (items can be repeated several time) to the matching [drawing item code] page number.

How can I do it without having to make it manually or making one x-ref manually and then copy paste it to every instance of the same code (and then again with next code and again ’till I drop dead)?
Is there a way to use some kind of script?

Every [item code] inside the table share a same paragraph style and the same character style
Every [drawing item code] for the drawing gallery share a same paragraph style (different from the [item code])

I know nothing about this–but I would probably do it the hard way and drop dead.

      also another question…
I need to replace all the codes I put in a table with other codes, is there a simple way to do it?
The codes are a direct match like:

      OLD NEW
      0001 AXCK1
      0002 PKLM3
      0003 QWSW2
      0004 CDK12

For the batch find/change, you might want to use a tool such as MultiFindChange from automatication.com

For the cross-references, there are some scripts to make the cross-references, such as:
      https://creativepro.com/create-a-cross-reference-quickly-with-this-free-script.php
and then you could probably copy and paste the x-ref text.

There are also some powerful x-ref tools in Cross References Pro: https://www.dtptools.com/product.asp?id=crin&more=downloads (but I don’t know if it will do what you want)

What you’re describing is often done with commercial catalog tools, such as Teacup DataLinker, 65bit EasyCatalog, Em Software’s InCatalog, and so on.

      thanks a lot!

Right now I managed to replace the codes using the find/place by list script delivered with inDesign
It took just a while to write the code using some lists from excel and text wrangler to copy/paste everything with the right format.

I check immediately the free script you linked!

      Cheers!
