For years, I have used the online EPUB Validator to check my epubs validate (https://validator.idpf.org).

It’s been a while since I’ve made an ebook and today it appears https://validator.idpf.org isn’t working. All I receive is this rather brief error message:

      This site can’t be reached
      validator.idpf.org refused to connect.

Has EPUB Validator been out of action for some time or is this a blip?

If it’s out for the count, is there another recommended tool? I don’t like working within Terminal/command line. I much prefer a simple interface, which is why the online version of EPUB Validator was always an accessible method.

      Any tips much appreciated.

      Hey DB,

Have you sent anyone at the IDPF an email to let them know it is down or ask why it is down?

Check out Pagina, I’m a command line guy and this is one of the few GUI epubcheck applications out there that I would recommend. Super easy to use, no command line what-so-ever, just drag and drop.

      Thanks Aaron,

I’ve just written them via the only address on their website ([email protected]) but it bounced.

After briefly checking out Pagina, it seems great. It’s also up to date with EPUBCheck 4.2.2.

Funnily enough, I’ll need to work to an older version of EPUBCheck as IngramSpark only support v3.0.0 – and that’s the distro model I’m working toward.

Perhaps there’s a way to get Pagina checking EPUBCheck 3.0.0 …

      Hey DB,

oh no! Well I just passed on the message on twitter to see if anyone knows why it is down.

oh shoot, up until recently I was running two versions of ePubCheck so I can understand. Hmm, the hard part about that is either finding something else that is old enough that only checks for 3.0 or maybe emailing them and seeing if they could do a 3.0 version. Its at least worth asking, for stores like IngramSpark. Technically if it clears 4.2.2 it should clear 3.0 but it always nice just to know it clears the version asked without wondering.

It was brought up on Twitter that since the IDPF merged with the W3C in 2017, it doesn’t really exists anymore and the website will gradually fall into decay for the foreseeable future.

Another web based validator that was recommended that you could check out is https://epubcheck.mebooks.co.nz/

Thanks Aaron – that’s most helpful of you.

Ingram are rejecting epubs which validate via epubcheck 4.2.2 if they contain code which wasn’t part of 3.0.0. This means I’m having to downgrade some valid 4.2.2 epubs to meet their older standards. I’ve flagged this as an issue with them but I’m not sure when we’ll see an update to their system.

I’m now using command line to check epubs against 3.0.0, so I’ve at least conquered that little technical hurdle.

      Thanks again for your help!
