      Hi!

      I’m researching an e-book projekt. Converting various texts from an archive into ebooks. My target audience is most likely using an iPad or a computer. So I’m thinking three formats:

      * Fixed e-pub
      * Two pages as a spread on one A4-page pdf (for printing and computer viewing)
      * Print a a low volume paperback using some self publish-thing

      But I need to start somewhere with my main design. And two things is difficult for me to make quick decision on:

      1. Best type size. I know that depends a bit. But I need to start on some value and I rather go for “most common”. What size would that be?

      2. Aspect ratio of the page. Would you go for the clear 1.333 (3:4) as an iPad or the more 1.4 as the A5?

      Hi,
      I have done a lot of fixed-layout ebooks and print books and all three of your formats would be perfectly valid. I would suggest 12pt as the basic type size with line-spacing of 1.4 if they are text-heavy books. It could be very different if they were picture-based books.
      You could produce just one version, which would be the print paperback, and then also upload that as a fixed-layout ebook. Basically, you would need to set the paperback size to something that would be compatible with both print and digital devices, so something like A5 should do it. You could then output the book to PDF, fixed epub, and imposing it as two PDF pages on an A4 page.
      If you are planning on getting paperbacks printed then you would need to make sure your page sizes and margins were compatible with whatever printer you’re using.
      Probably the best plan is to set up a few pages as a test and try out a workflow, particularly with regard to typeface text size as you might decide that, say, 14pt would be a better fit for your projects.
      Obviously you would need to follow a different direction if you were going to do a reflowable ebook.
      Hope this is of some help.

      Thank you Roger. That helped a lot. Especially your thought about focusing on A5. Because I’ve realized that the options for making a paperback in 3:4, with direct-to-print, is limited.

      If you only want to produce a single one-size-fits all file, we recommend you use an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10, with the longest side at least 3840 pixels. Our fixed-layout eBook conversion prices are based on you supplying a single file for conversion. https://get-shareit.com
