I have a document that uses has a lot of US standard measurements within the text. This means prime & double prime glyphs. Like many typefaces, ours do not include these glyphs. To get as close to the correct appearance, we use straight single and double quotes with an italicized character style. This is applied through the use of GREP. In other words, if you follow a number at the end of a word, then fix yourself.

This works when I’m the typesetter as I understand the value of correct typography. My InDesign is set to not use Typographer’s Quotes, since I rarely use them. Now, I need to send a template out for many other people to use. As far as I’m aware, I cannot force the use of typographer’s quotes based on the template. Unfortunately, the use of typographer’s quotes for measurements is rampant. Is there a way using GREP that will force the “smart quote” into a “dumb” italicized quote?

Is there a good reason for using a typeface that doesn’t support the inch and foot marks?
From an outsider perspective, it sounds like you’re looking for a second workaround to fix your first workaround, so to speak.
Or is the problem that authors don’t use the correct characters anyway, and just type a ” when they should type a ??

Edit: might have guessed – this forum doesn’t support the inch mark either, hence the double question mark in the line above!
