My doc has a paragraph style that was imported from Word. Each time I try to delete it or change it in any way, Indesign CS4 crashes. I can't even get CS5 to open it whether a native file, a IDML or INX file. :(

Any suggestions? Anyone? Please?

Oh, I cleaned/cleared the sometimes-evil font cache too.

Can't you do anything at all with that style? Change its definition, Based On, a total redefine, etc.?

Is it in use anywhere? (I wouldn't know if that matters, actually — but I've had ID freeze on me when I tried to delete a paragraph style that was heavily used.)

Can you rename it? From ye olde memory: certain characters that were allowed in style names in Word caused problems in InDesign. Lots of versions ago, but you never know.

Jongware always to the rescue :)

So far, no luck doing anything to the style. I even sent it to a friend to see if she could save it as INX but it crashed on her.

I did a “Find/Change” and tried to change the entire style. Crashed.

I did a “Find Font” and changed them all to a Helvetica and it still crashed so I don't think it's a font problem. I have deleted pages and saved the 100 book in 4 different files. So far, each is crashing.

Oh, I gathered a report to so I could search and find the page that is using that style and it didn't show up.

I may have to toss in the towel so I can get something productive done.

Grrr. I delete all pages but one. Deleted all master pages but one. Deleted everything on the one page. Deleted all unused styles and was left with Normal and the other hateful one.

If the style isn't used anywhere you can just kill it in the IDML or INX file. This will involve editing some XML, but it's pretty painless, I promise.

The easiest way is in the INX file. Open it in a text editor and search for the name of the evil style. It will be an attribute of a <psty> element, like this:

<psty pnam=”c_PureEvil” …

Delete the entire psty element. Save and close. Open the INX with InDesign. The style will be gone. Everything it was applied to will now be formatted with [No Paragraph Style].

The process with IDML is very similar, but a little more involved. It's a cinch if you have Oxygen, which can edit IDML files without unzipping them. But if you don't, just use the drag and drop IDML script I posted about here: https://creativepro.com/dra…..ml-etc.php

Basically, you just drop the IDML file on the script and it turns the IDML into a set of nested folders.

Find the Resources folder. Inside it, you'll find Styles.xml Open it with a text editor.

Search for the name of the evil style. It will be an attribute of a <ParagraphStyle> element, like this:

<ParagraphStyle Self=”ParagraphStyle/PureEvil” Name=”PureEvil” Imported=”true” …

Select the entire ParagraphStyle element (everything between and including the opening and closing tags) and delete it.

Save and close Styles.xml

Re-run the script to pack everthing back into and IDML archive.

Open the IDML with InDesign. The style will be gone. Everything it was applied to will now be formatted with [No Paragraph Style].

I am unable to create either a IDML or INX :(

I gave up and recreated my document.

Thanks for the tips though. I love learning new things and maybe this info will come in handy in the future.

Bummer. Sorry to hear that. Just curious, are you saying that InDesign crashed when you tried to INX or IDML the file?

Yes, InDesign crashed each time I tried to:

Create a INX

Create a IDML

Selected the bad paragraph style

:(

Hi Mike!

I have a same problem: when I want changing or deleting some of the paragraph styles which I was importing in the past, CS5.5 is crashing. All this problematic styles are linked to some objects but I can not recognize them in my document.

I tryed find IDML files but I can not find them. I found one old INX file from version CS3 and it was very easy opened it in the Sublime and understand their structure. Wher are located IDML files?

Help me, please! ;-)
Tomas
