Hi everyone, I’m new here and I hope I’m doing this correctly :)
I’m working on a huge catalog of books that uses tons of images. If those images were named in a specific way (ie: every book cover with its isbn), could I somehow make indesign automatically place them in the document (and maybe in specified placeholders)?
If anyone can give any tip to make my job easier, it’d be a great help!

Hi Sabrina,
some kind of yes and no: You cannot do this by default with InDesign. But this can be done via scripting. A script could read all file names in a folder and place the right image in your placeholder. This placeholder must be a named frame or can be e.g. text with a specific para style.
Since there is a bit of testing needed, we call this here a “paid script”. If you interested, you can mail me directly at [email protected].

While I’m sure Kai could do an awesome script, there may be off-the-shelf options that could help. For example, if the ISBN numbers showed up in a text frame, you could perhaps use this:
Replace Words By Images And Vice Versa. Free Script For InDesign CS5 And Above.
Another option is to use Data Merge, though that really depends on the kind of document you want.
Ultimately, a custom script is always the most efficient and personalized option.

Hi Sabrina [Kai and David],
… Disccusion without interest without more explanation!
Where are your data? What is your process? What is your layout? Are you ready to pay for a personalized scripting way? …
(^/)
PS: Lots of demands are made by persons who don’t have automatism experience! … They just want a “click(s)” solution that works for them!
Imaginary case:
A designer has placed all the test in separate text frames (1 frame per “product”) to have a more cool and variable layout.
In each frame, the “0000000000” SKU code text has beed pasted in a secondary text frame (anchored or not (in this case, all “module” items are grouped together)).
Of course, “SKU code” text frames have different sizes [height/width] depending of the company commercial politic (“this product is a best-seller”, this product is a new one”, this product is on-sale”, …).
All the graphics [named, e.g. 0000000000.psd] are in a folder at the same level as the ID file.
The importation settings have been locked on “filled proportionally”!Now, The pre-layout is finished! … Just 1 click to import all the images [with good dimensions!]!!
The designer is truly happy! No need to cancel the Christmas holidays! =D
