      Hey guys and gals,

For years I’ve been irritated by a detail in Indesign, namely that it refuses to break words containing hyphens. So the Norwegian word “1600-tallet” is split “1600-tal~~l~~et”. I want 1600-~~tal~l~et”. Of course, I can insert a discretionary hyphen after the hyphen, but that’s manual labour (a search and replace would not do, since in many cases, I want to retain the other break points as well). I’ve also tried using the custom dictionary feature, adding tildes, but it does not seem to work at all for words that contain hyphens.

Is there some setting that I have overlooked? I use Indesign 2020 with Hunspell hyphenation. But changing the version or the hyphenation engine does not seem to do the trick.

      Any thoughts?

Quite dismal that this has still not been fixed since 2015… the fairly annoying workaround is to do a GREP search for hyphenated words:
      \w+(-\w+)+
for replace, set the style to Advanced Character Formats / [No language] (I do it as an override, as I don’t want it to interfere with my character styles). Or at least that worked on the version I was using previously. I have a feeling it’s a hunspell issue. It’s a bit of a drag doing it for every book, but I guess you can script it if you can be bothered.
