I have a newsletter I use every 3 months. Up until a few months ago everything was fine. I would make a template from the previous document and start my newsletter. Now when I open the document, make a template and save it as my new document, the default text is blue and underlined not black and not underlined. When I bring in a paragraph or page from Word (where the text is black and no underline) it comes in blue and underlined. After much searching I have found that ID6 is automatically applying the Hyperlink Character style to EVERYTHING that I import.

How do I stop it from doing this?

Do you have a character style for the hyperlink? If so, perhaps that has been selected and when you import your file, everything picks up that character style? If that’s the case, click on “none” and import.

We had an instance a year or so back when a client said we had prepared her file wrong. And that everything was coming in as Zapf Dingbats. She threw a fit. Turns out she had the Zapf Dingbats character style selected and when she imported the file–everything came in as Zapf.

Yes, I do have a character style for the hyperlink and the text imports with the Normal para style. I import a text doc (Ctrl D)and the text comes in with blue and UL. If I right click on Normal (the para style applied automatically-I’d like to change that but that’s another issue for another time) and I have the option of Apply Normal; Clear Character Style so clearly it IS applying the hyperlink style but I can’t find it. Style Settings says [No Paragraph Style] + next: [Same style], exactly what is right above that in the editor. I go through ALL the other options in editing the style and cannot find a Character style at all, let alone the Hyperlink style. I’m at a loss.

Where else could the Character style be being applied?

It does sound like the character style is being applied.

Open your character style sheet palette and when you import the file, is the hyperlink character style checked/highlighted? If so, select “none.”

That’s the only reason I can think of that it’s all coming in with that style applied.

This is really baffling me. This was not an issue until a few months ago. Clearly the character style Hyperlink is being applied (I can see it highlighted in the character style panel) but I cannot figure how to stop it! I’m going to delete the Hyperlink style and see what happens. But even if that succeeds, I’d REALLY like to know WHY it’s happening!

I have solved the problem by deleting the Hyperlink style and then recreating it (same name). Now when I import a word docx it comes in with no character formatting and in the Normal para style. But that doesn’t answer WHY?? did it do it in the first place? I probably caused it myself, but how? I’d like to avoid repeating the mistake. Thanks for your help!

I”m not sure why it got stuck on it. I had that happen a few times as well.

Usually clicking on “none” will work, but sometimes it just gets stuck.

I’m pretty sure it originally happens because the last thing you were probably doing was applying that character style or editing it. And it stays in effect until you click normal. It *should* go back to normal when importing text, but sometimes it doesn’t.

I’m glad that deleting it and recreating it worked.
