Our office currently uses InDesign CS6 and is looking to upgrade to InDesign CC. I am just wondering if the graphic designers upgrade to InDesign CC will our editors who use InCopy CS6 be able to continue to edit documents or will they need to upgrade to InCopy CC as well? Also, we currently use a layout-based workflow but am wondering if switching to an assignment-based workflow would work around the different versions?

The editors will need to upgrade to InDesign CC. They can subscribe to CC for just that product for $19.99/mo. per seat.

You have to think of InCopy and ID as a single product. They need to be used in unison with the same versions.

It’s overall the same but has a few slight changes I’m not 100 percent about indesign but flash had a few tools taken out.

I think Robert might be talking about differences between InDesign CS6 and CC.
I know this question is old, but fwiw yes, InCopy CS6 can open assignment (ICMA) files created by InDesign CC or CC 2014, edit the stories, and the ID file gets properly updated. I would still consider this a stopgap method, as the text composition engines between the two versions are a bit different (as they always are between versions), so you might get some recomposition as soon as a story is checked out, even if you don’t edit anything in there. Best practice is to keep everyone at the same version.
