A coworker approached me yesterday and asked how to customize the toolbar InDesign. My response was no, you can’t. He said according his research you can not only customize it, but you can add chart making tools much like those in Illustrator. I spent a few minutes looking into the topic and all I found was toolbar customization was on a wish list for some users. I do not believe my coworkers claims and I have not see the results of his research either.

Can you confirm the toolbar cannot be customized, or if I am wrong, can you shed any light on this topic?

As always, thank you in advance.

It sounds as though your co-worker may be confusing “customizing” with installing a plug-in or plug-ins. The only way to customize the toolbar is to set it to either a single-column, single-row or two-column layout in Preferences > Interface > Panels > Floating Tools Panel.

I’m aware of only a couple of options that allow generation of charts in InDesign. One is a font (https://www.fontshop.com/families/ff-chartwell), and the other is a script solution (https://www.indiscripts.com/post/2010/06/claquos2-pie-chart-builder-for-indesign), but I don’t think either adds any tools to the Tools panel.

Maybe a plug-in could add a tool to the toolbar, but I don’t recall seeing that in a while. I think your co-worker may be thinking of Illustrator.

As for making charts, Jason Hoppe wrote a terrific article about that in issue 126:
