We used ti use InTools Power Headers to create our running headers, but they seem to have gone out of business.
InDesign’s Variables simply are not powerful enough. We need to create “Yellow Pages” running headers which show the first and last classification headings on each page. Surely others have the need for this!!! How do you do it?Thanks!

If I’m understanding correctly, you want to have two running headers that show the same level of listings on a page, one with the first item on the page and the other with the last item on the page.
Based on that logic, you can create two variables using Type: Running Header (Paragraph Style). The Use option for the first one should be set to “First on Page”, while the second variable would be “Last on Page”. The Style option would be the same for both. Then place them on your master pages where you want them to appear.

Thanks David.
Yes, that would kind of work but:
– the “first on page” is picked up from the first occurrence of the specified Paragraph Style. We need it to pick up the “current” Paragraph Style
– I don’t know of a way to insert a separation character (eg a dash) between the two headingsThese things could be accomplished quite easily with Power Headers.
The “first on page” Paragraph Style (or Character Style) could be jerry-rigged by hiding the Paragraph style in teeny weeny invisible text within each listing. Not a great solution, but it would work. But what about the separation character?

If you create a text frame with the variable / variable, that shouldn’t be a problem….

I think I better understand what you’re trying to accomplish, but an illustration would be helpful rather than my providing a solution that may not be relevant. Do you have a link to an example?
