This is probably something really simple, however, I have not been able to locate an answer. We create manuals with part numbers, callouts on graphics and they are associated with the part in the text body and in the parts list. How can we link callout in the text to callout on the graphic? Link callout on the graphic to callout in the parts list. We import the Parts list using an excel spreadsheet that is created using the Solidworks CAD program.
We want the callout to change with minimal human action. So, we want to accomplish this: When a part is removed/changed in the Parts List, the number is automatically updated in the callout on the graphic which then automatically updates the callout in the text throughout the document. -

Hi Tim! You should know by now that nothing involving numbering in InDesign is going to be as easy as we hope. ;-)
One option is text variables, but I think that’s not efficient for part numbers:
The best option is probably x-refs… remember you can format the cross-reference to show just the number!

The problem is not really the use of cross-references and an auto num that seems totally relevant but how these RC will be created [one by one] and how the game will be played … with images and associated lists updates [manual update in InDesign (add-delete legend piece name/number – added-removed associated RC) or use, for the “legend” block, of a linked text (to an Excel file, automatically updated, but associated RC manual added-removed)].
The RC creation batch and the use of linked texts could seem to be the hardest way to play the game! … but not truly sure! ;-) -

Michel is a pro scripter in France, and sees the world through a very cool lens of “everything can be automated with scripts!” He is right, that there are much better ways to do this, through scripting.

Michel,
Please advise a good time to discuss creation of this script and the cost of creating.
