I am at a complete loss to explain what I am seeing.
I have an indd file that includes a lot of Pali Diacrits.
It’s an old file and the Font Garamond Pali has some quirks.
Regular shows as egular Bold as old and Italic as talic.

But everything appears exactly as it should and I can make a PDF of this book with no problems.

Then I saved the file using a different name .

Now when I open that file, I get a Missing Font error
Garamod Pali egular and Garamond Pali old are missing.

How is it possible for an exact copy of a file to behave differently from the original?

An InDesign file is actually a database, and when you do a save as, it saves all its little database tables anew, which can cause changes like this. I would do a save as IDML and then open the IDML to see if that clears up any gunk in the system. That’s an even more low-level clean-up.

      Many thanks, David.
Saving it as an IDML file and then opening that gave exactly the same problem.

Are the fonts in a “Document fonts” folder or are you. using something like Suitcase/Fusion?

I’m not using anything like Suitcase/Fuiision just the normal Font folder in Windows 10.

But I think you might have the answer. There is a Fonts folder in the folder containing the INDD file. The file is in a package folder.

And if I save, then open, the copy of the InDesign File in the same folder as the original file, I do not get the missing Font error.

Is the Indesign File in a package folder different from the same Indesign file in its original folder.

I thought that Indesign file picked up their fonts from the WEindows Font folder. Certainly I don’t creat a special fonts folder when I start a new Indesign project from scratch. And thos missing Fonts ARE in my Windows fonts.

      Thanks Dwayne,

Jim, I’m glad I was able to steer you in the right direction, and that you got it figured out.

Bob–I always thought the folder had to be “Document fonts” as well (exactly as typed [except for the quotes]). But I’ve noticed that in the later versions of InDesign that “Documents Fonts” seems to work. I don’t know when it was changed. But “Document Fonts” does work in CC2017. I just tried it again.

      Jim,

The first place INDD looks to for fonts is the “Document fonts’ folder before moving onto fonts installed on the Windows or Mac system (that’s probably simplifying what’s really happening). It has to be in the same folder as the INDD file and it must be named EXACTLY as you see here (without the quote marks).

It eliminates a lot of headaches, especially if you work in pre-press as I do.

I think it’s one of the most brilliant features of INDD.

Thanks again for all the help. I have a much better understanding of the setup now.

      Best wishes
