      Hello all,
I have gone blue in the face for 2 days now searching and reading just about every article I can find regarding an answer to my problem. I have successfully made paragraph styles that give me multi-level numbered paragraphs across text frames by defining a list name. My chapter number, paragraph level 1 and paragraph level 2, nicely increment throughout my document.

When I generate my TOC I would have expected this (simplified):

      Chapter 1 Name
      1.1 Paragraph Level 1 Heading
      1.1.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading
      1.2 Paragraph Level 1 Heading
      1.2.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading
      etc

      Chapter 2 Name
      2.1 Paragraph Level 1 Heading
      2.1.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading
      2.2 Paragraph Level 2 Heading
      2.2.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading
      etc

However I get this: (numbering of chapter 2 paragraphs does not increment to 2, instead just continues on from Chapter 1)

      Chapter 1 Name
1.1 Paragraph Level 1 Heading (correct)
1.1.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading (correct)
1.2 Paragraph Level 1 Heading (correct)
1.2.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading (correct)
      etc

      Chapter 2 Name
1.3 Paragraph Level 1 Heading (incorrect)
1.3.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading (incorrect)
1.4 Paragraph Level 1 Heading (incorrect)
1.4.1 Paragraph Level 2 Heading (incorrect)
      etc

As I said earlier, the numbers for the chapter, level 1 and level 2 paragraph heading increment correctly in the document.

If anyone could help me with this I would be eternally grateful,
      Thanks, Paul

Hi David, thanks for your reply and the tip. However, my paragraph numbering is correct throughout my document i.e at each new chapter, the base number increments to the next number in sequence and the sub numbers reset and start incrementing as paragraphs are added.

My problem is in the TOC. The numbers in the TOC just keep the base number set as 1 regardless of which chapter is listed.

It’s fixed! I worked it out with a bit of trial and error. It’s amazing what sleeping on it can achieve. It’s hard to explain, but basically the style I had set for each level in the TOC dialogue box was based on the paragraph numbering styles used in the document, thus causing a some sort of compounding renumbering effect. Thanks, Paul

This is somewhat the same as the problem that I am encountering where the the chapter number just does not increment although I have setup the multilevel list properly and in accordance with the Tip that David refers to. I actually have two styles setup…one for restart and one for continue…much like numbered lists in the body of a document.

The problem is intermittent and the chapter # will stop incrementing at an arbitrary point…apparently of it’s own choice. Once I fix the offending chapter by hard coding the chapter #, it will work fine again…for a while.

Even stranger, I copied a chapter file from another book, changed to and applied the appropriate masters for the current document, but on update of chapter # in the book menu the chapter number maintained the position from the previous book and incremented accordingly. The chapter styles in each book are the same. Again the workaround was to hard code the chapter Number using the Restart style.
