I have had two clients tell me that ePubs created with embedded fonts (“Include Embeddable Fonts” under Advanced) were rejected by Nook Press. Another told me that Lightning Source rejected his ePub for the same reason. Has anyone else run into this problem? These were made using CC.

Do their publishing guidelines say they allow embedded fonts?

Looking more closely at their ePub formatting guidelines it says they do not allow embedded fonts. Guess that answers my question.

Here is the guidance from NookPress support:
Embedded fonts are allowed, but the publisher should own the right to include licensed fonts. Encrypted fonts are not allowed. If your .epub file is rejected by NOOK Press with an error message saying “Encrypted .epubs cannot be imported into NOOK Press”, it usually means your file contains one or more encrypted fonts.
If the software you use to create your .epub file has the ability to encrypt fonts, you must make sure your software does not include an encrypted font in the .epub fileAs per the last line, Nook has problem with encrypted font and not embedded font. Open your EPUB in Sigil(open source epub editor) and set font obfuscation to None. Save and then try submitting your epub again. I think it should work.

Hi Pooja
I’m having trouble with an ePub file for a client. Nook seems to be rejecting it. It’s saying “Encrypted .epubs cannot be imported into NOOK Press.” I used custom fonts and created the ePub with InDesign.
I’ve been looking around to see if anything works, so I was just wondering if what you said,
“As per the last line, Nook has problem with encrypted font and not embedded font. Open your EPUB in Sigil(open source epub editor) and set font obfuscation to None. Save and then try submitting your epub again. I think it should work.”
Does this work? Am I supposed to put all the fonts under Font Obfuscation – None?
I hope it works.

Wait I just did it! Putting the Font Obfuscation” to None worked perfectly. Thank you so much!

Where do you find the Font Obfuscation setting in Sigil?

Hey Patricia,
When you open your ePub on Sigil, on the Book Browser on the left side, there is a “Fonts” folder on there.
Open that folder, and you’ll see the fonts that are used on the ePub. Select the fonts and right click “Font Obfuscation” and set it to “None.”Let me know how it goes! :D
