Hi,
I am having trouble converting an indesign document to a pdf utilizing printer spreads.I tried and got this message: Export Error:The Adobe print engine failed to output your data due to an unknown problem. Is this some thing any one has ever encountered?
Thanks in advance,
Nicole -

Run through the basic troubleshooting gamut: Change all Spot colors to Process, clean up/replace old/sketchy fonts and links, export just a regular PDF, isolate the problem (export one page at a time), export as IDML, re-set preferences. Are you using Preflight?

Is it only happening when printing as spreads or when making a regular PDF?
That error message is useless (as far as I’m concerned). I wish it would tell you what page.
When you export as a PDF again, open the status window to see the progress of the PDF being made. Many times, you can tell roughly what part of the file is causing the problem (i.e., if you get the error message at 50% when doing a 400 page book, it’s somewhere around page 200). If 90 percent of the book, it’s towards the end.
Nine times out of ten it’s an image with a bad preview.
To narrow it down further, make a PDF of the first half the document. If it goes through, then you know the second half has issues. Then try to 3/4ths of it. Eventually you will narrow it down. Don’t start off exporting one page at a time unless it’s a small file.

I got everything to work-almost. I got everything converts but the booklet only becomes as an EPS and changes the orientation to portrait.

Can you export as a single-page PDF? (Forget the booklet part for now)

Yes I can export a single page pdf. https://imgur.com/a/JlHr243. I’d love to drag and drop pages in to spreads and then convert them to printer spreads but that seems too easy.. I found that creating a document by opening Acrobat and letting Distiller do the conversion. When I tried that the right page is cut off https://imgur.com/a/in4bEii. . I think I know I have to change the page orientation <File>document set up) but if I change it by file>document size everything gets all messed up. It feels like I am overlooking some thing very simple. I just can’t find it!

Nicole, since you only have 16 pages, you should just Export a PDF, make a 16-page Facing Pages Document (or an 8-page 11×17), then Place all the PDF pages in a zig-zag pattern to create printer spreads. This is super-fast if you have Keyboard Shortcuts for Align to Page.

This is how prepress production used to do things in the olden days (and still do sometimes).
There are lots of imposition plug-ins out there, maybe someone can recommend one. (professional ones are really expensive)

Thanks. I thought I mentioned that I need to print to a duplex printer. I have to show the client exactly what the final product will look like. Consequently, using a 11×17 page won’t work because the document is 5.5 x 8.5 single pages that when placed as a spread fit an 8.5×11 paper. If I use a 11×17 paper there will be extra unwanted paper.
I found Imposition Studio but I haven’t tried it out yet. I’m not a night person..
Thanks again!
