I’ve bumped into an issue I never had before:
I’m typesetting a book with a running header (well, footer) of the chapter name.
In some cases, I’ve used shift-enter to split up the chapter title as I’d like it.
Usually, the shift-enter registers as a space in the footer.
But what’s happening now is – on the first page of the chapter, its registering as a space and on the subsequent pages, there is no space at all. When I add on a space, I see TWO spaces in the first page footer, and one in the subsequent pages.
I have tried “balance ragged lines” but its not putting things where I would like them.
Anyone know why this could be?
      Thanks!

InDesign treats the soft return as a space. Why I have no idea. But it’s been like that for years and years.

You either need to use a no break to rebreak the line, or tweak with the left and right indents to force words down.

Ah, I’ll do a no break. Thanks (perhaps more hours of sleep at night would allow for such simple solutions to enter my brain as well…)

But I was more wondering about the inconsistency as to what is happening on the first page of the chapter and on the rest of the pages.
I’ve used soft returns before and have never had a problem where it rendered differently on different pages of the same chapter….

I’m not sure why it’s inconsistent on some pages. I’ve had a page where the space didn’t show up, then pages where there was a space. I’m not sure why it renders that way.

I just know that it treats a soft return as a space.
