      Hi.

I have a tedious task here and I need some help.

We have 5 workbooks in 30 languages, and sometimes I need to update them. So I take old Indesign files for a language, make a lot of small fixes and they are okay. I try to use this opportunity to correct some standards, because these files came form different people and sometimes they changes font size, or position of some texts.

There is several master spreads in each book. They are based in one master, I just need to change the Section title in each master. My problem is I have the same text in the left and right page, so every time I need to:

      1. Open master page.
      2. Copy old section title.
      3. Delete the text frame in both pages.
      4. Override the master text frames for both titles (they are in the main master, and have a correct position and font size).
      5. Select the left text frame, “paste without formatting”.
      6. Select the right text frame, “paste without formatting”.

It’s okay, it’s not a big deal, but when you have 5 books with 10 masters each, takes some time. Would be good if I could paste the text in one frame and the other would be updated. Like when you have Alternate Layouts and the text frame content are “linked”.

Do you see a better way of doing this? I tried with variables, using the text of the first frame with that style, but didn’t work.

      Thanks,
      Luiz

Luiz, I would normally do this with a text variable too. Why or what doesn’t work in you case?

Another option would be link and place.

        Kai,

        Variables won’t work because:
        1. Texts frames are in different page (in the same spread) and the “Running Header” variable will work only in the same page.
        2. And when I put it into the master, even if it’s in the same page, I need to override the first text to “update” the variable.

I tried with Cross Reference, but didn’t help.

What did you mean by Link and Place? Use an external source for the text?

        Thanks,
        Luiz

Edit, Place and Link! Sorry, now I understood and it worked as a charm! Thanks a lot!

Luiz, first of all, you could work with some “hidden” helper frames, but I thought not of a Running Header, but instead of custom text variable.

Text variables are live since CS4 or so, but Place and Link is a great feature for that since CS6 and the update is easier, if you change things.

Good to hear, that is useful for you.

      Kai
