I am trying to make dot grid pages using InDesign, and I would like to have my “dots” evenly distributed both horizontally and vertically. I found how to set my tab so that I can have them 5mm apart on each line, but in all of the research I have done, I cannot find a way to set the line spacing to a specific measurement, only leading which, from what I can see, is only done by percentage. I apologize in advance if my questions seem silly, I am a novice, teaching myself as I go. I would really appreciate any help/advice! Thanks in advance! :)

You can go into the paragraph style and type in the leading, or if you’re not using styles, you can highlight and type in the leading.

Thank you for your reply, however I do not understand how to do this. I thought “leading” was only able to be set by percentage? How would I set this to mm? Thanks again!

Is there a return at the end of each line? If so you could use “space before” or “space after” in the paragraph menu.

I’m not sure I understand this. I’m sorry. I do not press enter at the end of each line.. I just tab out and it goes to the next line. I am willing to try this method, could you please explain more how I would do this? I apologize for not knowing, as I mentioned in my original post, I am very new to InDesign and I am just learning as I go. I look up as much as I can, but I also use help from people like you. I really appreciate all help!! Thanks so much!

It looks like you’ve got the leading figured out, but if you had a return at the end of each line (making each line a paragraph), you could also set the space between each paragraph by going to TYPE > PARAGRAPH and changing the “space after” value. But if changing the leading is working for you, that may be easier.

Thank you, Charolette! I haven’t used it much since I posted this as I had a family emergency come up and haven’t had a chance to do much work at all. I will be back on it tomorrow afternoon/evening, after I get my husband to the airport. I will definitely try your way and see which works best for me! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. I realize that in practically anything we do, there are multiple ways that each thing can be done, and I do think it’s best to try as many ways as possible to see which works best for the individual. Again, I really appreciate your time and advice! I will let you guys know which way works best for me. ? Have a lovely week! ~Kai xo

You’re most welcome. Don’t hesitate to ask whenever you have a question. I learned by the seat of my pants at a daily newspaper years ago, and there are many gaps in my own working knowledge, which is why I come here.

Charlotte, I apologize for misspelling your name! My phone does autocorrect and I have a friend named ‘Charolette’ so when I type in your name it changes it. I try to be sure I’m keeping an eye on it & correcting it, but I keep missing it I guess. So sorry!

Kaila: No, leading is only set by percentage when you use “Auto” leading. In most cases, you should replace “Auto” with a specific measurement. If you type 5mm, it will convert it to points, but that is okay.

Thank you! I will definitely try this! I had no idea. I have seen where to set the line spacing, but I can’t remember where it is. I’m away from my computer right now, but I will most definitely check that as soon as I get to my computer. This is great news. I thought it was going to be very complicated! Thanks again! Have a wonderful weekend! :)

I’m sorry, I was able to jump on my computer really quickly and I can’t find where to change it from “Auto”? That’s the only place I see where I can set line spacing. I’m in the Justification menu. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thank you, and I apologize for needing so much help!

I *think* I found it? I highlighted the entire text, then under where I set the font size, I typed in 5mm and it changed it to 14.173 pt (font is 12 pt), and I saw the text change. Is this what I was supposed to do? Thank you again so very much! Your help is very much appreciated! :)

Yes, Leading is in the Control panel, or in the Character panel… under the type size.

If you’re going to be doing much in InDesign, I encourage you to check out my video training on Lynda.com or LinkedInLearning. Or get a book about it: https://creativepro.com/resources/books-and-videos

        :-)

Thank you! I will definitely look into those. I know I need to learn more rather than relying on others to help me, but I honestly can’t spend any money right now for the learning materials. I’m trying to get a business started, and once I have some income from that I will be able to do that, thus making it possible to expand and improve my business. :) I appreciate your help! Just to make sure I’m understanding you correctly, when I type in 5mm and it changes to 14.173 pt that is still 5mm, correct? I tried also using the side ruler, but I haven’t figured out how to accurately measure using that. When I “drag” out the guide, it’s just a solid line. Again, I really appreciate your help! I will be back to take advantage of the links you advised me to use when I can. :) Have a wonderful weekend! ~Kai

Hello David, I haven’t had a chance to work on this in a while. A lot of stuff going on in my family. I am hoping to sign up for the free week on Lynda.com and watch your videos soon, but I want to make sure I’m going to hand time to watch before I sign up. I was just looking back at this, and I wanted to as a couple of things. What is LinkedInLearning? I am on the LinkedIn website.. where do I find what you’re referring to? Also, I clicked the link for the books, but there are so many! Can you recommend one that would be good for basically a complete novice that would be most relevant to InDesign CC 2017? Thank you! I hope you’re having a great week! :)

Kaila: I know what it’s like to be trying to start a business. Good luck!
      Yes, 5mm is 14.173 pt.
Treat yourself this weekend to a week-long free trial at Lynda.com using this link. Watch my “getting started with InDesign” title there and you’ll learn a lot in just 30 minutes. Then jump to the Essential Training course and you’ll learn a bunch more. You can learn a lot in a week!

Thank you David! I really appreciate your help and kindness! I will definitely take your advice and do the week-long free trial! I will start that next week, when I will have time to completely focus. I am going to spend the next day or two trying to learn as many keyboard shortcuts as I can, as I believe there are many that I do not know that would save me a lot of time. If you have any suggestions on where I could find those easily, I would really appreciate it! If not I will just search until I find as many as I can. ;) Have an amazing weekend!

Kaila–There are probably other sources that have the keyboard shortcuts (InDesign used to ship with a list I think back when it came in a box). But this may be prove useful:

EDIT: Not sure if you’re on a PC or Mac–but there is this for the Mac:

Thank you Dwayne! I have googled and saved several PDF files with some keyboard shortcuts, and one shows how to create your own. I haven’t been able to try any of them yet. I really appreciate this additional resource! Thank you so much for your time and help. Have a wonderful week! :)
