This has been driving me a little batty and I haven’t been able to locate anything like this in the forums or Google Search.
I’m trying to center align text that has a tab in the center (so I don’t have to hit space a million times). However, as soon as I hit Tab, it centers only the text that is after the tab. It then pushes the text before the tab to left alignment. Why does it do this? Am I doing something incorrectly?
I have screen captures, but I’m not sure how to upload.

I know this sounds like something that should be straightforward, but it’s actually not possible for a good reason:
The tab character is not just “a space”, right? The text after the tab character is positioned at a specific place horizontally. So centering the text really messes up InDesign’s idea of where everything should go. So it punts. Most people who do this actually want some specific amount of space between two columns, and then they want that whole thing centered. It’s a variation of this problem:
https://creativepro.com/setting-poetry-flush-left-center-on-longest-line.phpOne way you might approach it is to create a line and add it as an inline object between the two columns. Now make the line stroke set to “None” so it pushes the lines apart but you can’t see it.

Ah, makes total sense! I ended up using Insert em Space from the Type menu and just kept adding to the width I needed. I like the column and line ideas, as well.
In the end, I just need to sometimes forget what I know about MS Word when working with InDesign.
Thanks much for the reply! It helped!
