I have applied a numbering style to a paragraph style used for a chapter title, which prefixes ‘Chapter ^H. ‘ to the paragraph: https://hxtp.com/numbering.png

There is also a paragraph rule set to ‘text width’: https://hxtp.com/grumble.png

For some reason, it does not cover the number prefix: https://hxtp.com/doesnt_rule.png

How do I get the paragraph rule to cover the prefix automatically? While I could insert the text from the prefix into the chapter title, I may want to have a different prefix in the TOC styles.

Interesting! I never noticed that this won’t extend over automatic “variable” text. I’m not sure how you would set this up automatically (and still use the Text length)

I tried to work around this in two different ways. First thought was to set a character style on the numbering style that would give it an underline, and then offset that to sit above the prefix. No underline appeared under the text. Next idea was to use the underline setting of the main paragraph style, but that too results in no underline extending to the prefix.

Ultimately, it looks like number/list styles ignore both paragraph rules and underlines. Time to file a bug report?

Try working with a negative left indent.

This problem was addressed here back in 2013, with no solution either, except converting Numbering to Text.

That’s what I figured. Perhaps if enough of us report it as a bug, they’ll fix it and claim it is a new and exciting feature in a future release.

A bit dirty, but why not insert a right indent tab after the headline and give this tab a white thick underline with offset. The underline can be applied with a grep style.

      Advantage:
      – the numbered list must not be converted to text
      – the stroke above adapts dynamically

      Disadvantage:
      – you must insert a right indent tab
      – it works only, if you print on white paper

Doable with a basic para rule! (^/)
