Hi,
So my question/problem is this. I have this big book with a fairly large Table of Contents that ends up being a threaded story across a couple of pages.
What’s happening is that some big sections in the ToC have to get split up across pages and I’d like the header for those sections to repeat at the top of the next story frame. (See example below)[story frame 1]
H1 Section A
h2 subsection 1a
h2 subsection 2a
….
h2 subsection 16a
H1 Section B
h2 subsection 1b
…
h2 subsection 8b
[end of story frame 1]
————————————
[story frame 2]
h2 subsection 9b
h2 subsection 10b
…
h2 subsection 15b
(continues on)
[end of story frame 2]I’d like “H1 Section B” to automatically repeat at the top of the 2nd story frame so that it stays related to all the subtopics that are inside it as “h2.” The Sections/Chapters are big enough that to shorten the text frame so that each entire section can stay with its parts inside one story frame isn’t feasible. I also don’t want to manually put the repeat H1 Section name in at the top of each new story frame because it will disappear as I update the ToC for page number adjustments.
I’m wondering if there is a way either in the ToC Options or Paragraph Style Options to get it to do this. Or another workaround?
Thank you for your help!

Hi Lauren,
AFAIK there’s no TOC option that do this. You could try with a variable, set a running header variable based on the H1 style and put it on top of the master page, the variables will change according to the text of the H1.
I think it could works for you.

Hi Claudio,
I don’t think that will work. There isn’t anything I can see a Master Page variable helping out with. This is about inline tier 1 ToC lines repeating above new text frames that are threaded stories. (see below). You can see that the “General Maintenance: Hard Floor Care” (my example H1 Section B) has overflow subheads/subtopics that overflow into the next threaded story on the following page. I’d like to have the “GM: HFC” auto-repeat at the top of the second text frame, if possible. If I manually add in a line, it will disappear with every ToC update (and there are a lot of ToC updates, this book is big).

There’s no way to do that with the TOC options. If each frame is on a separate page a text variable can help and it will update automatically each time you update the TOC

Pages 2, 3, and 4 have two of the threaded story text frames. But I didn’t consider throwing a textbox outside the threaded story set and just lowering where the top of each subsequent threaded story starts. If I manually add those in, they won’t auto-disappear with every ToC update. While I was hoping for some sort of Paragraph Style and/or GREP magic, this will work in a pinch.
Thank you!

Hi Lauren and Claudio,
Imho, you’re right and wrong both of you! … ;-)
According to me, Claudio, you’re right proposing to use an “header variable” but that won’t work as it seems to me you think!
Lauren, you’re just right about the use of “some sort of Paragraph Style and/or Grep magic” but surely wrong if she imagines that could be enough to solve your problem!
That said, if interested to generate your TOC including this “header variable” just using a script [already written!] and playing one click, feel free to contact me! …
Best,
Michel, for FRIdNGE
