Hi — I’m using CC2018 and imported a file from Word with endnotes. There’s an unusual blue hidden character I’d like to know if it should be deleted or if it can be, or what it is representing. Here is a link to a screen capture jpg of it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ygb449r05npgm8/Odd%20Glyph.jpeg?dl=0
It’s not in any of the reference charts I’ve had nor do I see it mentioned in any articles on InDesign Secrets.
thanks,

What glyph in that photo are you referring to? Those all look normal. (The double-angle bracket is a tab.)

These characters are normally hidden in InDesign.
Try to go to: “Type” – and at the bottom: Choose “Hide hidden characters”. Then you don’t see them anymore. These characters are InDesigns way to show linebraaks, tabs and so on. You can select and copy them, find/change them, but they will not print, or be visible, unless you tell InDesign to show them: By choosing “Show hidden characters” :)

David – The one on the far left and the one on the far right that look sort of like “L”s I have not seen before and they aren’t listed in the handy chart that I got from InDesign Secrets. I know what the tab glyph and the space glyphs and line break glyphs are — what are the ones at the beginning / end for? They look like they come in pairs – one at the beginning and one at the end of the entry.

Oh, those are Endnote markers. All endnotes have them.
Good point that we should update the hidden characters chart to include that. Thanks!

Turns out that the endnote character IS in the hidden characters chart… there’s an updated one that includes it:
