      Dear Folks,
I am a relative newbie to Indesign. I want to have many images with text over them. I made the image in PS. I’ve been told I you should add the text in ID. Much of the text is similar so I wanted to place it in the library for re-use. I created the text in ID. If I edit the library copy the text in my placed copies does not update. I’ve tried to drag the text from the library, I’ve used the “Place from CC Libraries” command. I’ve control clicked on the library copy and there is no “place linked” option. If I create an image in PS and place it in ID it updates when I edit it. Is there a trick I am missing?

      Thanks for your help.

I’m a bit confused by what you are trying to do, but here it goes.

The image and the text are completely separate frames in InDesign. Use Layers if it helps. 1. File->Place your image. 2. Drag your text from the Library, and make changes. Personally, I use Paragraph Styles to format my text, so I can place it all at once, apply Paragraph Style, then copy/paste/flow as needed.

      Dear Colleen,
Thanks for responding. Not being so familiar with Indesign perhaps my descriptions are inadequate. I am creating the text in Indesign. I naively assumed that if I dragged the text to the Library and inserted it in another document that the library item would be linked. I was hoping that if I edited the Library item Indesign would update the instance of it in other documents. It seems to work that way with graphics I create in PS. If I edit the PS graphic library item it automatically updates the instance that I have in my document. I have a large number of charts to make that have some of the same text labels. I have had trouble fitting all the information in the charts. I have been experimenting with different fonts and font sizes. Once I find the right one I was hoping to update all the charts at once. I hope this is a little clearer.
      Thanks for your help!

Right, you may look at other ways to manage text. Understanding Paragraph Styles and Character Styles is most important. You can also link to Word Documents and Excel files (not just place them), then you can update the text in Word or Excel and have it apply to your InDesign document. Preferences->File Handling->Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files.

Also, you can make a New->Book and add individual documents to it. Then you can apply Styles to every document that’s in the book. You can also use Find->Replace in All Documents in a Book. This is a bit complicated, but may help you.

If you can post a sample of your project, or a screenshot, we can help you more.

Thanks for your response. I’m afraid I don’t understand it. The links you provided are generic links I am not sure how you will see the images? This forum doesn’t seem to have an option for me to post an image for you to see. Can you help?

Walter–you need someone to host the image for you (such as dropbox or imgur). You sign up for one of those, upload your image to there, and then it will give you a link you copy and paste here to show the image. You can’t post images directly here, but can post them via a hosting site (such as dropbox or imgur).

Walter, I have to suggest you do some InDesign 101 tutorials to understand how it works. To place an image, File->Place. InDesign calls these “Links” because the image is not actually in your document, it’s linked to it. To replace the link in the Yearbook document, click on it, Window->Links, there is a link symbol at the bottom, click it and you can navigate to a different picture to replace it.
