I am new to Indesign. I cannot find any directions for saving template files. I downloaded some templates from the internet; they are in my “Downloads” folder. Where should I drag them so Indesign will find them? Thank you?

InDesign template files are just like regular InDesign files, so you can put them anywhere you want. When you want to open one, you just navigate to it and open it, or find it in the folder and double-click on it. Nothing special required! :)

      David,
I understand that I can save a template anywhere, but I’d like them to show up in the “Saved” tab of the File>New>Document pull-down. It seems like this is a feature of InDesign, but I can’t seem to figure out where IndDesign stores those documents.

I see “save” and “save as” bu not a “saved.” I also see “Open Recent.”

I’m not aware that InDesign has a default location for templates, as Microsoft Word does.

InDesign templates can sit anywhere on your system there is no default location.
They will only stay in your ‘Open Recent’ if the template itself was one of the 20 most recent files (or what ever number you have set in preferences).

You can of course create a Template folder and save all your templates there.
When you want to use one just open the .INDT file in the finder or explorer and it will open in InDesign as a new unnamed document.
If you use the templates often make a Shortcut and place it in the sidebar (or equivalent on a PC) then you will see the shortcut in the Open dialogue box.
