Use Find/Change to Find Tables

10

Our friend Rudi Warttmann originally wrote up this technique for the German-language Publishing Blog.ch. He graciously gave us permission to adapt his blog post (in English) here.

InDesign doesn’t provide a built-in way to search for tables within a document. However, since tables always are contained as inline graphics within a parent “character” of Unicode 0016, they can be found with a simple Find/Change. Just open the Find/Change dialog box, enter <0016> in the Find what field, and click the Find Next button.

Thanks for the great tip Rudi!

Oh my GOD, I’ve been looking for something like that for ages. Thank you!

  • Masood Ahmad says:

I admit, I missed it too. I tried and it worked.

However, the info panel didn’t display the unicode value for the table nor I was able to load the selected glyph in the Find/Change.

Any clues, where and how you come to know the unicode value for a table.

  • Jean-Claude Tremblay says:

    Strangely InDesign can only find it in TEXT mode. There is no match in GREP mode using \x{0016}

  • Tim Waggoner says:

Very helpful when you have to pick-up another designer’s InDesign document and you have no idea how they assembled the layout.

  • Vesselin Pramatarov says:

But if you choose a command “Change All” something strange happens. Some ghost lines appear in place of the tables – the cursor catches them, but you can not select them automatically. You have to delete them manually.

  • Carlo says:

Great, I was looking for that!!! Thanks!
Does exist some code even for InLine anchor objects?

  • Lihi Bar-Haim says:

WOW!! Thanks for the really great tip!!

  • I like your Blog. It’s a useful information about advantage of tables. Thanks for sharing the post.

  • Robert Wonders says:

    Great tip!

But after you find a table, how do you make a change, say to a table style?
