If you only work with graphics in InDesign, you will never have any interaction with InDesign’s dictionaries. However, as soon as you add even a single character of text to your layout, InDesign’s dictionaries go to work behind the scenes controlling hyphenation, spelling, and even capitalization.

Dictionaries are absolutely fundamental to the way text behaves in InDesign. So the more you understand how they work, the more benefit you can get from them. In this article I’m going to take you from the most basic features of the dictionaries all the way down to the most sophisticated (and sometimes hidden) dictionary controls.
